When you ride the Mt Washington Cog Train, you're in for a treat. The Cog railroad train will carry you above the clouds to the top of the highest peak in the Northeast, Mt Washington, New Hampshire. The first forty years of the Cog Railroad's operation it had wood-fired boilers which powered the train to the 6,288-foot summit of Mt. Washington. Around 1910, coal was introduced as depicted in my rendering of Mt Washington's Cog Railway train. So, climb up to the top of Mount Washington on the world's first mountain climbing Cog Railway train! Or do the hard way and hike up to the top, the good news is Mt. Washington is the highest of AMC's four thousand footers.

In the 1800's the first railway locomotives were powered by steam and usually burned coal. Because steam locomotives included one or more steam engines, they are sometimes referred to as "steam engines". The steam locomotive remained by far the most common type of locomotive until after World War 2. This painting depicts a steam locomotive hauling logs as it passed a local railroad depot. Looks like the two hobos under the water tower won't be able to hop onto this train.

Maple sugaring is still an important part of New
England life today and is depicted in this traditional Maple Sugar
artwork painting! The maple sugar season normally occurs mid March thru
mid April. On the average it takes 40 gallons of maple sap to make
1 gallon of pure maple syrup. So, 4 maple trees, 40 to 200 years
old, are needed to make one gallon of pure maple syrup. The
boiling of the sap takes place in a sugar house or sugar camp, which is
a simple building that shelters boiling operations with a steam vent in
the roof and commonly using wood to evaporate and process the maple sap
into delicious maple syrup.

Ice Fishing is still an important part of New England life especially as shown by my painting of a typical day ice fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. Ice fishing is catching fish with lines and fish hooks or spears through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. Ice fishermen or anglers may sit on a stool in the opening cut by an ice auger on a frozen lake, or in a heated cabin or ice house shanty on the ice, some with bunks and lots of amenities. Sometimes you might even see a Model T Ford snowmobile beside an ice fishing shanty.

Quabbin Memories I used to live in Oakham Mass and became fascinated with the history of Quabbin Reservoir. One of the interesting facts is four towns were submerged to create Quabbin. They are Enfiield, Prescott, Greenwich and Dana. Also 25% of Oakham was taken for Quabbin and also in Rutland. One of my favorite hikes is take a bucolic walk to Dana Center. The buildings are long gone but the foundations are still there. Dana center was not submerged but is very close to the shore of Quabbin Reservoir. I wanted to do a watercolor in memory of the four now lost towns and thiis painting is of a Sunday morning sometime in the early 1900's. Bring your binoculars because you might see a bald eagle!

Mantelli's Bar Mantelli's bar is a historic landmark in Trinidad, Colorado and features a beautiful bar made in Germany and shipped to the US in the late 1800's. When you first enter this establishment, imagine the early days when the miners would be sitting at the bar talking about their stories of trying to find the lost mine or that elusive vein of solid gold.
