Two names are legends in the New England area.  This painting depicts a famous short track racing  historic moment between Fred DeSarro and Bugs Stevens (#3 and #15).  In 1971 Bugs Stevens and Fred DeSarro made headlines off the track when they switched rides.  Bugs Stevens went from from Len Boehler's #3 to Sonny Kozella's #15 while Fred DeSarro went from #15 to the #3.  It didn’t matter, they each kept on winning.

For 37 years, the action on Saturday night in Groveland, Mass was at The Pines Speedway. This quarter-mile asphalt oval opened in 1940, as home to the wild and reckless world of midget racing in New England . The Pines was a hotbed of activity, first in the form of midgets, but later a string of jalopy stock cars, cut-downs, Class A cars and, finally, late-model stocks made the race track a must-do event every weekend throughout the summer.  Regulars at the track were Ollie Silvia and Don McLaren 'The Flying Scotsman. Pines Speedway closed in the mid 70’s.

Riverside Park Speedway was a ¼ mile oval race track located inside of Riverside Amusement Park in Agawam , MA . The first full season of “modified” stock car racing was in 1949 and had 6000 to 8000 fans every Saturday night.  Each summer’s signature event was the “ Riverside 500”, a 500 lap “tag team” race with 16 two-car teams.  One car would pull into the infield pit area for service, and “tag” his teammate’s bumper to go out and replace him on the track.  The track closed at the end of the 1999 season. In 2000 when the park reopened as 6 flags New England the track was gone.

In the late 1960's a 1/8 mile long drag strip was built in the parking lot of Norwood Arena and was named "New England Dragway South". The strip was designed for street annd middle class pro drag cars.  Many a local ran their street legal Chevy, Ford, Dodge or American Motors car down the 1/8 mile strip. The pro class rail dragsters put on a good show too. One of the more interesting line ups of the night was the Top Stock Eliminator class. These were basic street cars driven by locals.  Win and you had serious bragging rights until the next race.
